Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia
Some of the Buddhist Illustrations created by Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia are free for everyone to use.
An online Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia, a project of a Buddhist monk-scholar Vello Vaartnou, was introduced to the public at UC Berkeley in December 2012. The encyclopedia has been online over 8 years and it has now 74 000 articles plus terminology dictionaries - Tibetan, Sanskrit, Chinese, Pali, Japanese, Korean. All work from collecting/entering data to cross-linking and illustrating has been done on a voluntary basis by Vello Vaartnou personally,
Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia is a life-long project, which probably goes on after our lifetime.
Vello Vaartnou started the Chinese Buddhist Encyclopedia for gathering, preserving and spreading the message of Buddha. Encyclopedia corrects and sets into logical and chronological order Buddhist materials and information, which has accumulated over thousands of years, adding new layers of cultural movements which have occurred and shaped Buddhism over centuries. The work is carried out in two forms- one is traditional Buddhist concept and other academic view of the matter.
Encyclopedia currently has 3000 readers every day, about a million readers a year. Looking at statistics, the encyclopedia has readers from all continents - first places go to China and the US, then come Taiwan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, European countries. The encyclopedia is actively used by universities and monasteries, scholars and students, lay people and organisations.
